Hongya Cave is Chongqing’s most photographed landmark, and for good reason. This 11-story stilted building clings to a cliff face above the Jialing River, glowing with thousands of golden lights at night. It looks like it was pulled straight from Studio Ghibli’s “Spirited Away”—in fact, many believe it inspired the film’s bathhouse (though Miyazaki has never confirmed this).

What Makes It Special
The building’s architecture follows traditional Bayu stilted house design (吊脚楼), but on a massive scale. What appears to be the 1st floor from the riverside is actually the 11th floor from the street entrance. This is Chongqing’s 8D geography in action—your sense of direction will be completely confused, and that’s part of the experience.
Insider Tips
- The best photo spot is across the river at Qiansi Gate Bridge (千厮门大桥), not from inside the building
- Take the elevator from 1F to 11F to experience the vertical confusion
- The interior is mostly souvenir shops and average restaurants—go for the architecture, not the shopping
- Metro: Line 1 or 6 to Xiaoshizi Station, Exit 1B
Best Time to Visit
Arrive at 6:30pm to watch the lights turn on at 7pm. The building is open until 11pm, but it’s most magical during the golden hour transition. Avoid weekends and Chinese holidays—the crowds can reach 100,000+ people.
