COMMON QUESTIONS
Guizhou Travel FAQ
Is Guizhou worth visiting for international tourists?
Yes absolutely but it appeals to a specific type of traveler. If you want to see authentic rural China, dramatic mountain landscapes, and vibrant minority cultures before mass commercialization arrives this is the place. If you prefer highly polished modern cities you might want to look elsewhere.
How many days do you need to experience Guizhou?
Because the province is highly mountainous and the best sites are spread far apart you need 5 to 7 days. This allows you time to navigate the terrain safely and properly explore the scattered minority villages and massive natural parks without spending your entire trip inside a vehicle.
Can I visit these minority villages independently?
We highly discourage doing this completely alone. It is extremely difficult due to severe language barriers and complex mountain transport networks. We provide local guides and transport consulting to ensure you reach places like Xijiang safely and actually understand the culture you are observing.
How tall is the famous Huangguoshu Waterfall?
It is exactly 77.8 meters tall and 101 meters wide making it the largest waterfall in all of Asia. The park surrounding it is massive and can be confusing. We map out the best viewing routes for our clients including the path that takes you directly behind the falling water.
Do people speak English in Guizhou?
Almost zero. Outside of the provincial capital of Guiyang this is one of the least visited provinces by Westerners. You will not find English menus or English speaking taxi drivers. You absolutely need our remote translation support or a dedicated local bilingual guide to survive here comfortably.
Do I need a travel agency for Guizhou?
Traditional agencies will trap you in a bus for hours and take you to commercialized silver shops. We provide independent cultural consulting and private local guides. This protects your freedom and enhances your experience allowing you to hike and explore at your own pace.
How do I pay for things in these remote rural villages?
Even in the most remote mountain villages QR code payments are the absolute standard. Cash is basically dead across the entire province. We consult you on exactly how to bind your foreign bank cards to Alipay or WeChat before you depart your home country.
What is the local food like in Guizhou?
Guizhou cuisine is famous domestically for being extremely sour and very spicy. It relies heavily on fermented tomatoes and chili. If you have dietary restrictions or a low spice tolerance our local guides will ensure your food is ordered safely and accurately so you can enjoy the meals.
