COMMON QUESTIONS
Chengdu Travel FAQ
Is Chengdu worth visiting for international travelers?
Definitely. It offers a rare and beautiful contrast to the fast paced coastal megacities of China. You get the global draw of the giant pandas combined with world renowned spicy cuisine and a deeply relaxed local teahouse culture. Our consultants help you tap into this unique atmosphere effortlessly.
How many days should I spend in Chengdu?
To truly appreciate the slow pace of the city we recommend 3 to 4 days. This gives you ample time to visit the Panda Base early in the morning, spend an afternoon relaxing in the local teahouses, explore the food markets, and take a full day trip out to see the magnificent Leshan Giant Buddha.
How can I see the giant pandas without dealing with massive crowds?
This requires strict timing. You must arrive at the Chengdu Research Base right when the gates open at 7 AM. This is when the pandas are most active and eating. By 9 AM the domestic tour groups arrive and it becomes overwhelming. We provide the local guides and precise transport logistics to ensure you beat the crowds and get the best experience.
Is Chengdu food too spicy for a Western palate?
Sichuan cuisine is famous globally for its heavy use of chili oil and a unique numbing peppercorn known locally as mala. It can be intense for beginners. However you do not have to suffer. Our local guides will help you navigate the menus and ensure your meals are ordered exactly to your personal spice tolerance level including completely non spicy options.
Should I book a package tour for Chengdu?
We highly advise against it. Packaged tours put you on a rigid schedule which completely ruins the relaxed vibe that Chengdu is famous for. We provide cultural consulting and independent local guide services. This gives you the safety and local knowledge of a guide but the freedom to linger in a teahouse for hours if you choose to.
Can I use cash to pay for meals in Chengdu?
Just like the rest of the country Chengdu operates almost entirely on mobile payments. Handing cash to a street food vendor will often result in them not having change. You must bind your foreign bank card to Alipay or WeChat. We offer preemptive consulting to ensure your digital wallets are fully functional before you arrive.
Will my navigation apps work in Chengdu?
If you plan to use Google Maps you will be out of luck as it is blocked by the national firewall. You must install a VPN prior to your flight to keep your current apps working. Alternatively we provide our clients with accurate local digital navigation advice and teach you how to use domestic mapping tools effectively.
Is English widely spoken in Chengdu?
English proficiency is very low especially in the authentic local restaurants and traditional teahouses where you actually want to spend your time. Furthermore the locals speak a heavy Sichuanese dialect that even standard Mandarin speakers sometimes struggle with. Our bilingual guides serve as your cultural bridge ensuring you do not miss out on anything.
